“You can’t be what you can’t see.”
— Marian Wright Edelman
It started with an idea in 2019 - to make a difference by introducing female role models into teenage girls worlds who may not have access to business women, the idea was fanned to life by a community of volunteer women, supportive businesses and school support - Empowering Girls was born.
Empowering Girls supports diversity and gender balance in the work place.
The programme centres on building confidence and partners inspiring business women with Year 9 girls (aged 13-14) in Devon, to help them expand their aspirations. By partnering mentees with successful women in a wide variety of fields, the girls can build a one-on-one relationship with a role model that can help them reach their potential.
Aims:
1. Shatter stereotypes and instil self-belief, a positive mindset and positive language
2. Introduce girls to female role models within a wide range of industries and sectors
3. Inspire and challenge girls to pursue their ambitions with confidence
4. Give girls access to knowledge, tools, skills and support to overcome their barriers to success
5. Increase awareness of STEMM careers
Mentee
“Before I started this programme I was invisible, now I feel people see me’’
— Mentee 2025 cohort
‘‘I had a bit of an idea of what I might want to do as a job, but I now can see what I need to do, and I’m really DETERMINED to do it now and I know it’s down to me”
— Mentee 2025 cohort
Mentor
“I had a very fulfilling experience working as a mentor in this programme. My mentee overcame her nerves and developed her confidence. When I asked her what she had learned from our sessions, her reply, "I am a good person and I believe in myself," made me feel really proud. Volunteering my time to Empowering Girls has been incredibly rewarding, broadened my awareness, and built my own confidence.”
